Beaches

What are the best beaches in Merimbula?

Short Point

With sweeping views up to Tura Headland, this ocean beach sits alongside Merimbula’s back lake. The short walk to Short Point headland is the perfect whale watching spot in Spring, and the car park offers some of the best views for eating fish and chips in Australia! Enjoy a coffee at the van year round.

Bar Beach

A favourite among locals and tourists alike, this beach sits at the entrance to Merimbula Lake. It offers stunning sunset views over the mountains and Main Beach and has a kiosk for coffee and barbeques.

Main Beach

Merimbula’s Main Beach sweeps south around the bay and is patrolled over summer and holiday season. Adjacent to Merimbula’s Fish Pen, it is a family favourite with shallow, often gentle waters. Walk around to the iconic Mitchies Jetty for an excellent coffee and a donut where you can also hire SUPs and kayaks!

Pambula Rivermouth

We believe it would be hard to find a coastal Australian scene that is as beautiful as here… Where Pambula River meets the ocean, these calm waters offer the perfect spot to soak in the rays and bathe in pristine sapphire coloured waters. In the summer holidays, the team at Ryefield Grounds are known to serve some of the best coffee in the region at their beautiful van.

Pambula Beach

At the other end of Main Beach is another beach that is great for families. With a surf lifesaving club often hosting events and patrolling in summer and holidays, the community of Pambula Beach love their stretch of sand. A great spot for beginner surfers to catch some breaks.

Wallagoot Gap and beyond

As you head north from Merimbula towards Tathra, this secluded beach is in Bournda National Park adjacent to Turingal Head picnic area. An incredibly beautiful spot, the beach lies in a small cove between two points and is the perfect spot to cool-off on a warm, calm day, particularly if you are doing the popular Wharf-to-Wharf coastal walk.

If you’re keen to explore the coast beyond Merimbula, we can highly recommend Kianniny Bay near Tathra, Camel Rock near Wallaga Lake and Bithry Inlet in the Mimosa Rocks National Park. The options are endless…
